The announced lack of new facts about Guild Wars 2 in December, “forced” me to write another gameplay review from this year’s gamescom. It was the lovely comments I received on the first one, that made me do it. Judging by the number of views on YouTube it is a more known video, but it is quite good as well, to place it in the same category as the Necromancer presentation.
What I like about the two presentations is they are bright, character does not start from scratch but the level is low enough to not be confusing. Alot is explained about the profession and the gameplay itself. ArenaNet did exceptional job with their presentations.
It starts with the already known overlook. The sun is shinning and the day seems perfect for adventure! We get to see some distanced harpies in the far reaches of Queensdale, where I slightly get a sense I’m seeing something I always hated the most in Guild Wars and that is camera. There is a certain point, and that point is low, where you just can’t look higher and it makes me feel very limited. I hope it’s just my paranoia.
We map travel to Claypool. There is a farmer outside of town that needs help with some bandits that have taken over his farm. I was more interested in the town but the road takes us into another direction, the more adventurous one, helping the farmer with them bandits. We get to see some action and some profession combinations.
We learn something about the pet, how it can learn new skills and how we can rename it as we please. Next we witness Ranger in melee combat and sword skills look just simply Amazing!
This is where I want to stop for a minute. YES! Finally a bow/longbow wielding class in mmorpg that can stand its ground with melee weapons. I was never a fan of this type of class, although I did own an end level hunter in a certain mmorpg. Ranger now opens wide to new options and I love it! I always wanted a melee Ranger even if it is against common sense. Why shouldn’t I fire two arrows at a nearing monster and slice it up with a sword when it is in my face?! And with Guild Wars 2 looking like players friendliest multiplayer game I can be a melee Ranger, contribute in group events and people can hate it or love it; I’m in!
Map travel then takes us to a tough opponent where we get to see the Rangers very own down state. Soon after we retreat to a swamp, where Temple of the Ages used to be, but nowadays we can only find ruins there and broken statues of Gods of Tyria. Not a happy sight. We go for a swim and tour the sunken statues. Swimming is another new and excitting feature in Guild Wars 2; it seems fast and easy so I hope exploring the underwater depths of Tyria will be epic!
We also get to see a monastery that seem to be an alcohol haven and could be an interesting spot to visit for many people. There is also alot of events here and we partake in an escort event.
Last thing we get to see is pretty nice and I always enjoy a nice landscape and a nice looking town! Ranger visits Beetletun and it has grown in size and looks really awsome! We can also find a dungeon in this place.
Presentation ends with another deserved applause, somewhere in the center of Beetletun. We received alot of information and seen another part of Queensdale in this short but great gameplay presentation.
