  • What’s Your Style? Jon Peters Talks About Combat

Jon explains reasons why Guild Wars 2 will have no dedicated healer and tank. He talks about down state, positioning and some other combat related topics, that are unique to the genre.

In a first person shooter there can be a variety of weapons, from sniper rifles to rocket launchers to machine guns and shotguns. No one looks at these weapons and says, “They’re all the same, they all just do DPS.” Why should an MMO be any different?

Oooh.. it's more like a recap of known things than news.. Does this mean they are refreshing our minds first to come up with a related news article next? (PvP anyone?)

That's fine. Just took me by surprise. Normally when something gets deleted there's a little message as to why. *shrugs*

An interesting argument that comes to mind is that of balance, though not a we understand it in GW1. Arenanet must make a balance between sufficient difficulty for serious gamers, yet not being too difficult for casual gamers. I think this will be the most difficult challenge faced by the developers. On one hand, the 'holy trinity' is a flawed concept even in GW1, but on the other hand, even casual gamers can quickly learn the 'meta' builds in order to operate within that heal/tank/damage paradigm.

I tend toward the view that GW2 will be much more challenging, and hope that Arenanet recognise this, as casual gamers will fairly soon probably be the great majority.
