  • Crafting in Guild Wars 2 - ArenaNet

ArenaNet released their crafting article today. You will only be able to have two crafting disciplines at the same time, but you can switch to other disciplines by going to the main cities. If you switch to one discipline and decide to go back, you will regain the skill level you had prior to switching.

    Disciplines

In Guild Wars 2, there are eight crafting disciplines players can choose from.

    • Weaponsmith – Weaponsmiths craft melee weapons, such as swords, axes and hammers.
    • Huntsman – Huntsmen craft ranged weapons like bows and pistol, as well as torches and warhorns.
    • Artificer– Artificers craft magical weapons such as staves and scepters
    • Armorsmith – Armorsmiths craft heavy armor pieces.
    • Leatherworker – Leatherworkers craft medium armor pieces.
    • Tailor – Tailors craft light armor pieces.
    • Jewelcrafter – Jewelcrafters craft jewelry, such as rings and necklaces.
    • Cook – Cooks can prepare food which characters can eat for temporary combat buffs.

    Gathering

Before you can craft new items, you need to get the raw materials needed for crafting. The basic materials needed for crafting depends upon the crafting discipline, but there are three ways you can obtain crafting materials:

    • Salvaging kits— Available from merchants, salvaging kits allow you to salvage crafting materials out of old or unwanted items.
    • Looting—You have a chance of finding appropriate crafting materials like hides or trophies when you loot slain enemies.
    • Harvesting—Ore veins, plants, and trees can be found around the world and harvested for materials.

I'm certain the cost of switching disciplines will not be that high so maybe we will be able to have everything on 1 character.

What I like is that everyone can gather everything because I find that a fun thing to do to relax from questing or in general leveling or proceeding through story by whatever means.

The next great thing is that leveling is rather fast and you don't have to craft items that are useless and you'll end up npcing anyway, just so you can level crafting art.

I think there is small choice in disciplines, there are only useful things and no side things that would be fun or so. Also too bad there is no fishing, but I cant wait to try out harvesting trees. =D

The crafting system is very good, and I think it is a lot better than other systems I have seen, especially the gathering. I will probably try to get all the relevant disciplines for my character.

I am impressed with the first crafting news, crafting in GW2 sounds more developed than I had even hoped. I played LoTRO for a short time, and though I didn't like the game mechanics, I did enjoy the crafting. Once again, GW2 seems to be adding the best from other games to the newer aspects of MMORPG that Arenanet are developing.

I do for-see one major problem with the collecting system though. If a player finds a chunk of seriously rare ore, he can just tell everyone where it is, defeats the object of being rare imo.

Well as a experienced L2 player where spoil and craft are one of the pillars of the game I can say that they made a good mix of all known gathering/crafting systems, it looks pretty simple but enough for having fun and spend your hours on it without getting boring and repetitive fast. Maybe I would like to see it more "complete" but I will look forward for "improves" that can make each job. As necromancer my main jobs will probably be artificer and cook. I really hope there will be some foods that give more or restore hp and mp, and improves each job can make will make it much more funny and profitable.

I am not sure when you find a rare node and other players will see the same node as you. What I mean when you see a gold node, it does not mean other players will see the gold node at the same spot. I think they might see silver or copper. This is just my opinion.
