Not much was known about PvP, but from today we can clearly specify wich types of structured PvP will be available.
Hot Join PvP: "Casual" Structured PvP, which can be played 1vs1 up to 10vs10. You will be able to choose from a series of game types and maps to play, even browsing by server population or by your friends list is possible. Once you finished a round, the next map will load, much like the standard in online fps games. This way you can play on one server if you'd like, and keep playing against the same people and build up a nice community if you'd like so.
Tournament play: The organized side of structured PvP. These matches are played 5vs5 and on the same maps as the "hot join" games. You will be able to choose between pickup tournaments (single-elimination, with 8 teams), monthly tournaments (you will need to qualify), yearly tournaments (grand tournament from montly tournament winners), player-run tournaments (custom made by the players).
The game types will offer much variety in gameplay. You will be able to play conquest (capture & defend), but each map will make this gametype unique. Each map will have different mechanics and other ways to earn more points, it will make room for great tactical teamplay. For now, the article does not mention other game types, but we are fairly certain conquest will not be the only type available to play.

We for one, are very eager to see the PvP matches from GamesCom, as this is one feature where Guild Wars 2 will likely shine over other MMO's.
