i like that idea! but. it should have it's restrictions also. first maybe just for the events. lets say we all go fight the shatterer, whoever joins that event in that "district" gets put into a global voice chat session. but with positional sound, as kryptic mentioned for mumble, from players within a certain range of yourself (maybe your aggro bubble). that would be for the constant voice chat. as far as hearing the guy on the entire side of the map/mob outside of your vocal "bubble" there could be a global shout feature where anyone involved in the event can hear you. there could probably be a restriction on how long the shout can be, 15-20 seconds, so that if you need to let the other players know that there is a huge mob coming their way, or reinforcements are needed somewhere. also, how many global shouts per minute they can use so they aren't continuously spamming the chat. well, that's what I have in mind at least, if you can understand my mumbo jumbo. lol. as for towns though, something similar, i'd just hate to be bothered with voice advertising for guilds. ugh. so there should still be a typing chat for everything, maybe just no global voice chat in the cities, just within a certain range of your character.
of course, some manual controls should be available so that if you do want a constant global voice while your running around the map with a group chopping up some skales, smashing some ogre skulls you can chat away without an worries of restrictions.
